Series 02: Masks of the Autumn Fair

Ittan

the indigo kite-cloth

One windy autumn a length of fresh indigo slipped off a dyer's drying line and simply kept going. It has been flying ever since.

At the fair it pulls itself into a small cloth child with a lion-dance mask, and lets the village children hold the end of its long tail as if it were a kite.

Drawn from the ittan-momen of Japanese folklore, which is in the public domain. Ittan's design, name and story are original to HOKORA. How we keep designs original
