Series 02: Masks of the Autumn Fair

Amabie

the shore fortune-teller

On the last night of the fair, fishermen say, something shines in the bay and a small figure with long sea-green hair walks up to the lantern stalls.

She tells no fortunes. She hands each visitor a paper mask of her own face and says: keep this, and be well. Then she walks back into the water before the drums stop.

Drawn from the amabie of Japanese folklore, which is in the public domain. Amabie's design, name and story are original to HOKORA. How we keep designs original
